The 2008 South African Internet population showed that year-end 2008, out of the 43,786,115 South Africans, 4,590,000 were using the internet regularly. That's 10.5% of the population.
The results for 2009 are said to be very high because of new broadband wireless supplied by Sentech, cheaper ADSL and ISDN from Telkom as well as the cellphone internet usage boom by facebook.
The biggest news in ADSL is the completion of the SEACOM undersea cable project. ADSL was thought to drop by over 50% this year but ADSL providers are slow to reduce costs, although new companies such as Vox Telecom, WirelessG and Edgars have substantially dropped prices this year & competitive price reductions are set to increase. |
